Never before have I seen a Japanese band blend the different musical tastes of five people together so well.
Luna Sea, or LS, has always turned out songs that had an experimental feel. If they didn't, there would be little to distinguish them from other bands of their generation, like L'arc-en-ciel and Glay. For the generation of commerce, the selling value of these guys lies mainly in their youthful energy, not their music. At the same time, the melodic surprises they turn up never fail to continue garnering fans.
Style (c. 1997) was their most pop-type album. Frightened LS' rock fans for a while. But then after Style came Lunacy (c. 2000): evidence of the maturity of their musical style, and its veering away from the trappings of pseudo-pop.
Like L'arc-en-ciel and Glay, they started off as visual kei, and ended up less so. At this point in their career, only Sugizo has remained somewhat visual, with his perpetually pink hair and "gothic bitch" outfits, which people have actually come to expect.
Sadly, Luna Sea disbanded last December, 2000. There is nothing to say if this breakup is permanent or not (remember, they'd "broken up" before the Shine album). But the members are already taking up solo careers, and it appears that at the meantime, their fans could do nothing but wish each of them the best of luck.
